How We Score Travel Gear

Guides and product assessments

A version-identification guide answers a bounded question: which layout is pictured and what specifications are published? It states that scope rather than displaying a score, confidence label or buying verdict. It does not assess long-term durability or rank alternatives. The scoring, confidence and verdict rules below apply to product assessments, not to these guides.

Research, not testing

We compare permitted owner reports, independent reviews, community discussions and available video evidence. Manufacturer information supports specifications only. Every verdict refers to an exact model/version. We do not reproduce Amazon customer reviews or stars; Amazon review evidence is disabled pending a permitted API integration.

Evidence and independence

Each source has a link, retrieval date, model, source type, independence group, incentive disclosure and reliability assessment. Syndicated stories and repeated discussions are not automatically independent reports. Affiliate funding alone does not establish unreliability. Before affiliate-funded or sponsored findings can receive Medium or High reliability, we must document the methodology, verified use and editorial independence, with a written rationale. Unknown incentives remain Low reliability. This does not turn a short review into long-term evidence. Unknown ownership duration stays unknown.

The weighted score

Owner satisfaction contributes 35%, durability 25%, value for money 20%, and consistency 20%. Each dimension has a source-backed written rationale. The overall research score is rounded to one decimal. Missing evidence for any dimension means insufficient evidence—not scored; missing values are never replaced with invented numbers.

Score anchors

0–2 means evidence of severe recurring problems; 3–4 substantial negative findings; 5–6 mixed findings; 7–8 mostly favorable findings with documented limits; 9–10 unusually strong, consistent evidence. These are editorial anchors, not measured failure rates. Explain the specific basis for choosing a score within a band. Durability requires documented ownership of at least six months for a numeric score. Value considers documented features and alternatives; current prices must be checked by the reader, not hard-coded here.

Confidence

Low means missing scores, conflicting findings, fewer than three usable independent non-manufacturer source groups, or fewer than three source types. Medium requires those minima and substantive findings. High additionally requires at least four independent groups and four source types, twelve documented months on the market, and a high-reliability long-term ownership report. Source counts alone do not prove accuracy or representative consensus.

Verdicts

Leave It applies below 6.5 or for a serious documented recurring defect, regardless of the average. Wait applies to insufficient evidence or Low confidence. Pack It requires at least 8.0, Medium or High confidence, and no notable caveat. Other scored Medium/High cases are Shortlist It, including 6.5–6.9. These are situational research recommendations, not promises of safety or suitability for everyone.

Review and maintenance

A human personally checks each article against its evidence log before approval. The exact content and evidence are fingerprinted; changes need fresh approval. Last reviewed reflects an actual assessment, not an automatic date refresh. Revisit evidence after material model changes, corrections or new long-term findings; initial review interval is ninety days.
